Heritage Preservation in Perth
There are four distinct treatments for historic buildings and landscapes. Choosing the appropriate one is critical to ensure that a property survives and thrives, and that the intentions of its original builders are given justice.
Conservation/Preservation
Conservation/Preservation is the general term that refers to the repair and maintenance of a property’s form and historic materials. The main objective of this treatment is to minimise deterioration and damage, rather than to ‘modernise’ the place.
Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation refers to the alteration of or addition to a historic property to ‘update’ it for contemporary use whilst retaining its historic qualities. For instance, if a significant historical feature was lost or destroyed, an accurate replica may be installed in its place.
This treatment is often necessary when the property has suffered massive damage or a multitude of safety issues, and the property is intended to be used by the general public.
Restoration
Restoration is changing or updating the look and feel of a property to reflect a specific historic period. This may be from the time the property was originally built, or when it played a significant role in a historic event. In any case, all evidence from other time periods are removed, and any missing features from the time period to be recreated are added.
Reconstruction
Reconstruction is the rebuilding of a previously disappeared or destroyed structure or building. Consequently, it is much more time-intensive than the other treatments listed thus far.
